“Epic” is the word Rachel Sloan used on invitations to her wedding to Thomas Brandt during Monday’s Great American Eclipse.

“We’ve been looking forward to (the eclipse) for a couple of years anyway. So when it came time to pick a date,” Rachel said, as Thomas finished, “It made the most sense. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime (event) and the stars and the sun and the moon, everything’s moving into alignment, just for us.”

Engagement

The couple became engaged in January during a trip to Orlando’s Universal Studios Harry Potter World. Brandt was on a work trip and flew his soon-to-be fiance down because he knew she loved Harry Potter so much and hadn’t been to the amusement park before.

To get into the spirit of visiting Harry Potter World, they both dressed in costume school uniform capes from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. With the replica Hogwarts Castle in the background, Brandt bent on one knee and asked his love for her hand in marriage. The proposal was a total surprised and she, of course, accepted.

When the two began planning their wedding, they knew they wanted a Harry Potter theme. The eclipse was just a bonus.

“I’m a spiritual person and he’s a science-oriented person,” Sloan said.

“So it kind of combined the both. The theme is more her and today is more me. But they both worked well together,” Brandt added.

The couple capitalized on the themes all around.

At the wedding at Cannonsburgh Pioneer Village, guests received Harry Potter wands and eclipse glasses as party favors.

Total eclipse of the heart

The actual ceremony began before the total eclipse.

Brandt walked into the wedding hall to the song, “Black Hole Sun,” by by Soundgarden. The bride’s processional was “Storybook Love” from “The Princess Bride” movie. They also played Bonnie Tyler’s famous, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

Before the total eclipse total eclipse took place, the couple exchanged vows and rings.

“Then we let everyone break and moved everyone outside and let them get their glasses on. Then right after the eclipse was over, we took our first steps as husband and wife, and kissed,” Sloan said.

Themed reception

Decorations at the reception held at Mayday Brewery included a Hogwarts Castle cake made from Rice Krispies treats, butterbeer mugs, Harry Potter glasses, a glass-encased Sorcerer’s Stone, and table stands representing the four “houses” from Hogwarts School.

The DJ for the wedding played eclipse-themed music and hosted a Harry Potter trivia match.

Sloan also wore a golden snitch bracelet and necklace. The snitch is a game piece from the mythical game of quidditch.

Not only did the moon and sun align for the couple, but the weather cooperated in Murfreesboro as well.

“We’re just excited to go on from this moment,” Brandt said.
